Editor’s Transfer Aspirations

If I was in charge of this Reading team and John Madejski asked me who my possible transfer targets were for this coming January, this is who I`d identify. The following players have not necessarily been linked with the Royals but is my own opinion of possible squad-strengthening signings.

Alan Smith (Manchester United)

Since returning from the horrendous injury that saw him break his leg and dislocate his ankle, Alan Smith has featured very little for Manchester United. His manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has spoken on the need for Smith to be playing regular football in order to return to full match fitness.

Pros:

Alan Smith is without doubt an exciting Premiership player. Having recently recovered from a lengthy injury, his main qualities are his unmeasured desire, enthusiasm and passion to win. He would provide some much needed Premiership experience upfront, and could drop into midfield if the need ever arose. He has also played sixteen times for England, scoring one goal.

Cons:

If Smith was made available, I`m certain that there would be a number of clubs interested in securing his services. The fact that he is not match fit would mean that it may take time for him to get back into rhythm, and we`ll be needing a striker who is capable of instantly reducing the focus on Kevin Doyle.

Likely cost: Loan

Interesting to see if clubs would play him in his newish role of midield or as a forward ala his Leeds days.
