Watford defender Adrian Mariappa is close to sealing a move to the Premier League with Reading.

The 25-year old is currently having a medical with the Royals after having a bid accepted from Watford, according to the Watford Observer. Mariappa has been a long-term target for Royals boss Brian McDermott, but it finally seems he has captured his man, after publicly admitting he wanted to strengthen his defensive options before the pre-season tour to Portugal.

A £2 million bid for the London-born defender was submitted last month, but was politely turned down by the Hornets, who were after more around the £3 million mark. However, Reading’s second and accepted offer is believed to be within the same region of £2 million, but with several clauses attached. The transfer would end Mariappa’s seven-year spell with the Championship club.

The move is set to be completed either later today or tomorrow, but it is unlikely that the defender will take part in Reading’s friendly with AFC Wimbledon tomorrow, with Alex Pearce, Kaspars Gorkss, Sean Morrison and Brynjar Gunnarsson expected to be the four centre-backs taken. So how do Reading and Watford fans feel about this move? Is it a good bit of business?
