Reading’s director of Football Nicky Hammond is certain that the Royals will do themselves proud in the Premiership next season, should they get there.

Hammond has no doubts that the Royals will be able to compete with the big boys next season because the squad is a young one and well gelled together, which is probably the reason the team are runaway leaders in the Championship t the moment.

How the league stands at the moment, Reading need fourteen points from their remaining games to ensuring a Premiership place, and that’s not including slip ups from the chasing pack.

‘I am confident that if we go up we can compete,’ said Hammond.

‘We have assembled a young and athletic group of players with a strong mentality that work hard for each other and who crave success.

‘It would be a huge challenge but I believe we are capable if we are fortunate enough to get promotion.’

Steve Coppell popped his head back round the press-room door last night to ask for the code to open the exit door. The Reading manager may not know his way out of Bramall Lane, but he has the key to the Barclays Premiership after this result.
