Cup Means Sweet FA To Kits

This weekend sees the 3rd round ties of the most famous cup in football, the FA Cup.

With Reading making the short journey to Spurs on Saturday, it will come of little surprise to Reading fans that Steve Coppell will travel with a weakened squad.

Whilst Coppell has often been criticised for his selection policy regarding cup competitions, Royals top scorer Dave Kitson couldn’t agree more with him.

Kitson, a boyhood Spurs fan, will be one of many first teamers rested for Saturday’s game, but perhaps somewhat surprisingly, he could not be happier; ‘We won`t win it.

‘I don`t give two sh**s about it to be honest. All I care about is staying in the Premier League. That`s what everybody at this club cares about.

‘Our status is not protected by staying in the FA Cup. It`s as simple as that.

‘It`s a fantastic competition and hopefully one day we`ll be in a position where we can compete for it, but not now and that`s how things are.’

Kitson believes that the Royals players need a rest and this could be key to their survival; ‘We have just come off the back of some fixtures that have been tightly packed together and we have played almost two full games with 10 men.

‘I am absolutely shattered and so is Kevin Doyle and a lot of the other players are as well.’

Despite Reading being just five places off the relegation zone, Kitson is convinced that the Royals will still be playing Premier League football next season.

‘I maintain there are three teams in this division who are not as good as we are and I feel that will keep us in the Premier League.

‘Results went for us again on Tuesday but that can`t keep happening.

‘It seems when we really need a win, we win, but when we need a win to put some distance between us, we lose. A bit of consistency would be nice, but form like that doesn`t tend to get a team relegated. I hope that doesn`t come back to haunt me.’

Whilst both Kitson and Coppell will be heavily criticised for their negative views on such a prestigious competition, I’m sure neither of them will ‘give two sh**s’, if the Royals can survive another season in the top flight.

A real team player by the look of things….useless *****er springs to mind.

His problem is he does actually say what he thinks, doesn’t care what people say. To be fair, he’s right, we’re not gonna win it and the league is more important. It will give a chance for some of our fringe players to prove their worth, especially Lita, who looks like he could be on his way out, although a hat trick at the lane could change that! Don’t forget our reserves drew at old trafford last season, they’re certainly gonna be taking it seriously, cud be another surprise…

Surprised you Reading fans aren’t disgusted by his attitude. If you use his logic that you aren’t going to win the cup so there’s no point being in it, they surely that applies for the league as well. If you go to the championship you stand a realistic chance of winning that so surely thats the division Kitson wants to be in?? Or is it that he is trying to find himself a new club & more money so that makes staying in the premier league more important to him. Whichever way you look at it, thats not the sort of comments a professional player should be coming out with.

Hang on, when have arsenal ever fielded their first team in the cup??!!

After 5 years competing and establishing ourselves in the premiership we may have the chance and status to risk mounting a challenge on Europe/one or two domestic cups.

Kitson gets in trouble for saying what everyone else thinks, it’s fine for the big teams to tut disapprovingly at us, but premiership status is much more important, and being a small club we don’t take that for granted. The league is a long term thing that we can build on each year, the cup is a distraction that we can do without until we are an established premier league team, simple as.

have to agree with what he is saying from a reading point of view! if they put thier best team out in the cup one of the lads gets injured or suspended they could be in a lot of trouble relegation wise which has long term financial implictions! its all well and good arsenal and chelsea fans sayin its not what a professional should be sayin when they have the luxury of playin a strong reserve side in the cups and not have their league staus in jeapordy but if it was the case i think their opinion would be different!
ans ashburton gooners analogy on not winning the league so why bother is ridiculous! if they went far in the cup and lost their premier league status in the same season they would be back to square one! they would lose a lot of their players. if on the other hand they do well in the league, establishing themselve, they would be in a far better position to attract a higher quality player then they have at the club. surely you can appreciate that much at least!
