Steve Coppell gave recognition to Nicky Shorey after the left-backs role in Reading`s epic 6-0 win over West Ham.

The defender was pivotal in Reading`s performance; Shorey was instrumental in four of Reading`s six goals.

Coppell said: “He`s been a big part of what we`ve been about this year and he`s grown in stature and confidence as the season has wore on.”

“The fourth was a magical goal and was created by the run he made.”

Although the Madejski Stadium is often alive with fans chanting “Shorey For England”, the Reading`s boss will not comment on whether or not he feels the player deserves international recognition insisting that:

“He has recognition – he plays for us every week and that`s all he needs,”
“There`s an awful lot of good players around so it`s a question of doing it week in, week out.

But Coppell was quick to acknowledge that yesterday was a team effort and even if some players stood out more then others there was no doubt that the entire team was sharp and performing brilliantly, and that was the biggest reward for Coppell.

“Today was obviously terrific for us and was an occasion for us to enjoy, we played well and it`s surprising because the last two games we put in an awful lot of effort.

“But to have the energy and flow to our play that we had today was a tremendous compliment to the application of the players and their discipline in their recovery and making themselves ready for this game.”

Nicky Shorey himself, meanwhile, was eager to follow in a Steve Coppell type example and brushed off any of the kudos he was given insisting it was a team effort.

“It`s great to be a part of a team playing like that. It`s an unbelievable feeling.” Shorey said speaking to the Royals` official website.

In a completely modest interview the left back refused to comment on whether it was his best ever performance saying:

“I`d like to stress it`s about the team; the lads are unbelievable.”

Speaking on the games set pieces, Shorey remarked:

“We talked about attacking set pieces and the lads did that with venom.”

“Sometimes it was like they had nobody stopping them, and it was excellent to see the way it went for us.”

shorey was awesome, definitley deserves the cries of shorey for england, especially on recent form… its a shame mcclaren will probably pick by reputation and name rather then how the players play recently. but saying that shorey could be out of form by the time england play next!

“SHOREY FOR ENGLAND!” In all fairness, if Paul Konchesky can win 2 England caps, what’s stopping Shorey? He’s twice the player Konchesky could ever hope to be.
