Earlier this week Steve Coppell was quoted as saying that he was looking to take a break from the game, which led to fears that he could be about to walk away from his job at Reading, but as he told Sky Sports News he was basically misquoted with what he said and he has no intention of quitting Reading: “I find that I did an article and we were just chatting towards the end and that’s where ‘I will take a break soon’ came out.

“I was referring to the future not a specific time in the future.

“I made the comment in reference to my longevity in the game, it is probably because in certain times I have had a break.

“That break has not been by design. In the past it has been because no one wanted me.

“Seven years ago I could not get a job so I took a year out and that was the best education I could have got.

“Sometime in the future that will happen again, that’s for sure.

“But it’s not next week, it’s not next month.”

Coppell insists that he remains fully committed to his job at the Madejski Stadium: “I am 100 per cent committed here – not even a doubt.”

He did however acknowledge that if results continued to go against his Reading side he could leave anyway as he could be sacked, but this doesn’t frighten or worry him: “It might not be my decision.

“If we are not winning games I will be removed.

“It is not an issue for me, I am never frightened of that.

“It is one of the reasons why I have been surviving for so long, it is not a fear.”

It looks as though Reading fans will have to put up with Mr Grumpy for a while longer.
