Convey Challenged to Stake a Claim

Bobby Convey, who had been out with a serious injury for some time has been challenged by Steve Coppell to prove his fitness and stake a claim for a regular starting place, starting tonight against Liverpool.

With Stephen Hunt the man in Convey’s way, the left winger will be given the opportunity tonight, as he comes in as one of several changes, “He had long-term rehab and still gets tweaks now and then but has come back with real enthusiasm and desire and that’s what you need from all your squad players,” Coppell told the media.

“During the time he has been away, Hunty has made a massive impact. The year before that, Hunty was very patient while Bobby was playing.”

However, it is necessarily a straight fight between Hunt and Convey for that place on the left, as if Convey can prove his fitness Coppell could well use Convey on the problem area right side of midfield, he added, “It may be that in future there is room for both of them.

“Bobby came on on the right side on Saturday and was effective in getting crosses in. It could well be that is the way we will go forward but for the moment it will be nice to see him play 90-odd minutes against Liverpool, get those under his belt and give him the confidence.”

Convey is a great talent, so if he can regain full fitness and build on his showing against Wigan at the weekend after coming on as a substitute then he could make the right side on midfield his own, failing that Hunt will have a real battle on his hands to keep his place he took from Convey on the left.
