Reading manager has expressed his praise for Hope Akpan, who started his first game in the Premier League against Sunderland on Saturday.

The 21-year old started his first game in a Royals shirt against Sunderland, after some impressive cameo appearances off of the bench. Akpan had a good game in the 2-1 victory over the Black Cats, proving both his attacking and defensive capabilities in the centre of midfield, a balance we have struggled with in midfield.

Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire, Brian said: ‘We watch players, we think we know who can fit in to our environment and he’s a perfect example. You wouldn’t get him for 300 grand now! Just because he’s come from a so-called lower League side and hasn’t cost us eight million quid, we might get a bit of stick – but I love signing players like that.’

‘He’ll become really popular with our fans, I am sure. It’s great for him to have made his debut in a victory. You can see his attributes, he’s strong, quick, he glides over the pitch, he can run with it, pass it and can score a goal. What else does a midfield player need? He’s a great character as well. He looks a really good prospect.’

Hope did look a tiny bit erratic at times, but considering the leap he has made in the past few months, you have to expect it. Not sure if playing him alongside Ledge is the best idea though, as they are quite similar in their game, so bringing in someone like Jem or Guthrie alongside Akpan would accommodate both well.
