Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand has been linked with a return to Reading, according to the Daily Mail.

The 22-year old enjoyed the best spell of his career with Reading back in the 2008/09 season, where he played 44 of the Royals’ 46 games in their Championship campaign. Ryan was also voted runner up for Reading’s Player of the Year, just behind eventual winner Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Royals were keen to retain Bertrand for the following season, but were told by Chelsea that he was to be involved in their first team plans. However, he was to go out on loan to Nottingham Forest weeks later. This season he has enjoyed more first team action with the Blues, making four starts in the league.

Reading will keen to add more steel to that left-back spot following promotion to the Premier League, with Ian Harte likely to be rotated next season. The Irishman’s contract runs out this summer but it is highly expected that the 34-year old will earn a new deal in the coming weeks.
