Our Centre backs have been the most promising aspect of our squad, playing a huge part in conceding just seven goals in nine league games.

Paul McShane- 9-

McShane has been Reading’s best signing and Steve Clarke deserves some credit in attracting him to our club. Paul is a proper defender that loves a tackle and win the majority of his arial battles. The Irish Centre Back has hardly put a foot wrong and the captain has also organised the side perfectly. He’s created fantastic partnerships with both Ferdinand and now Hector and all us Reading fans can hope for is his form to continue.

Anton Ferdinand- 9-

Anton has also barely put a foot wrong. His return from injury has been like a new signing and his experience has really shown. Ferdinand isn’t just a good defender, he’s also so calm on the ball without doing too much and he’s played a huge part in our upturn in form defensively. Unfortunately he’s sustained another injury, resulting in him missing the last four games in all competitions. Hopefully he’ll be back in the near future to help our push for promotion.

Michael Hector- 8-

Hector has taken the place of Anton since his injury and he’s improved each game. The young defender was voted as the second best player last season by the fans and he sealed a surprise 4m deadline day move to Champions of England, Chelsea. Since then, Hector has played in four games, putting in some top performances. Michael still undoubtedly has room for improvement as he still is prone to a mistake, but there will be no better players to learn off than McShane and Ferdinand.

Jake Cooper- N/A-

Although Cooper did play 90 minutes against Everton and he’s made the odd appearance in the last few minutes to help see games out, I feel it’s tough to judge the Centre halves performance so far this season. The big defender has some great attributes as shown against Everton and I’m sure he’ll continue to get game time throughout the next few seasons. More than capable back up.
