Nigel Adkins seemed very satisfied with his team’s performance in the season opener, despite conceding an injury-time equaliser.

The Royals started well at the DW Stadium, but went behind to a Callum McManaman goal, which took a few unfortunate deflections. However, goals from Shaun Cummings and Sean Morrison got us in front, before James McCarthur’s last-gasp goal meant we left Wigan with just a point.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: ‘Away from home against a side expected to be up there, I thought we were the dominant team, especially in the second half. We created a phenomenal amount of chances, starting with Ryan from a pull-back.’

‘We had so many things flashing across the box. But I’m taking the overall big picture, I thought the spirit was there for all to see with a young side. The quality was excellent and we played some really good football. Simon Cox looked a class act when he came on.’

You could tell the gaffer felt a bit deflated that we conceded in the last minute, probably even more so because of the way he played in the second half. As he says though, there are plenty of positives to build on for the next 45 games, with plenty of players to return.
