New boss Nigel Adkins has urged Royals fans to remain patient, saying a change in the style of football won’t happen overnight.

The 48-year old witnessed a cruel reality check in his first game as Reading boss, as his side were thumped 4-1 by Arsenal at the Emirates. Adkins has promised the Reading fans last week that he will get the team playing good, passing football, but is keen to emphasis this change in style cannot be implemented straight away.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, the new boss said: ‘We’ve asked the players to do a few things, not to negate the strengths the club has had in the past, and it won’t happen overnight. Some of the lads came back in only for half a session on Friday, but that’s the challenge we’ve had and the same for so many clubs.’

‘We have a game underneath our belts now, we’ll take the lessons from it looking forward to an important home game. The supporters will get behind the club and the players because it’s important. We’ll work as hard as we can to give ourselves the chance to get the required points. These players desperately want to do well.’

I think the Arsenal game echoed what Adkins has been saying, it was clear the players were not going to adapt to his philosophy in such a challenging game. This Saturday, we may see glimpses of it, but I’m not really expecting any consistent, free-flowing, passing football until next season, with a reshuffle of the team.
