Nigel Adkins and his players are currently underway in their pre-season schedule, but has said fitness is more important than results.

The Royals are set to play their first friendly in Portugal on Tuesday 16th July, but could organise an earlier fixture, as the Wycombe friendly due to take place on Saturday 13th July, was postponed. Adkins has been quick to emphasise that winning games is not necessarily the main benefit of pre-season work.

Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire and quoted by BBC Sport, Adkins said: ‘I’ll say it now, for me pre-season results are totally irrelevant. It’s not about being ready for the first game of the season, it’s about the 46 that we’re going to play so that come the season end we are on top.’

‘The object is to get to a point so that I can select the team against Ipswich Town with everyone ready and available. It’s about making sure we get the patterns of play we want and that everyone gets sufficient game time. It’s going to be a long, challenging campaign.’

Wise words from Adkins again – I would rather have good performances and levels of fitness, over results. As well as two top division Portuguese sides, Swansea and Bristol City will provide decent tests for us, considering they play a similar style of football under their respective managers.
